Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says it is up to Aston Villa if they want to make Scott Carson's loan permanent.
Carson recently revealed that a permanent move has been agreed - and Benitez says he understands why the former Leeds keeper may want to leave.

"He knows Jose Reina is top class and it'll be difficult for him to play here. Villa can decide if they want to keep him," he told his club website.

Carson is tipped to make his England debut against Austria on Friday.

"Scott is a good professional and a nice boy. This is a crucial time in his career and he needs to play," Benitez added.

"At the moment we are concentrating on our own team and our own competitions, but Villa can decide if they want to keep the player."

Villa manager Martin O'Neill has preferred Carson to Thomas Sorensen and Stuart Taylor this season.

And Carson, who had a previous loan spell with Charlton, believes the show of confidence has helped him progress towards his ambition of becoming England's first-choice 'keeper.

"It has been a totally different challenge for me this season. Last season, when I was on loan at Charlton, I was having to make five or six saves a game.

"With a team like Villa this season, I am lucky to have to save one shot a game. That is why [Chelsea's] Petr Cech is probably the best 'keeper in the world because he has that one save to make and he does it.

"For me, I've had to work on different aspects of my game this season like concentration and that is the main thing," he said.
